Morrissey’s Our Frank (do you see what he did there?) from Kill Uncle, the worst album he’s done (and he’s done some bland stuff as a solo artist, but that album is just plain bad):
# Last Week
Okay, so my plan last week was to finish the outline.
I didn’t.
But I think I’ve made it a ton better, so I’ve been spending a lot of time fiddling around with stuff. Making the narrative logic really tight and expand on the minor characters in this one.
Last week, I was feeling that it was a bit linear and it was too obvious what was going on. But I had a chat with a writer pal and ran through my issues – and had a breakthrough. The first half of the book had a good flow and hit all the narrative beats, but the resolution felt trite and obvious, but this breakthrough opened everything wide. I like to think of my books breathing and try to judge whether a book is any good by that feeling. I guess it’s like the thing feels three dimensional and stands on its own. And gives me massive amounts of enthusiasm to get on with it.
And this weekend saw me travel down to Brighton to celebrate David Headley’s 50th birthday in style. And what style:
A cracking night, eating sushi and dancing to all sorts of cheesy music, including Atomic by Blondie and Rapper’s Delight by the Sugarhill Gang. Awesome fun and a massive happy birthday to David when it comes this week.
# This Week
This week’s plan is to make serious progress with the outline and get it to the point where I’m happy to share it. It’s practically a novel in its own right now, about 23,000 words for a novel that’ll be 90,000-ish in the end. Feels like a lot of work, but it saves HOURS in the writing and editing process. And I want to get this one absolutely nailed down.
Anyway. That’s enough to be going on with now. Have a cracking week!
Cheers,
Ed
Loving the punk look. Suits you sir 😉
Looked like a great night, and you know what they say. "ALL WORK AND NO PLAY."
